Although it was historically one of the species harvested together with moli\u00e7o<\/em> \u2014 carried in boatloads from the Ria and used to fertilize soils \u2014 Zostera marina<\/strong> is today a threatened seagrass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For this reason, researchers at the University of Aveiro (UA) are proposing its repopulation. They believe that, among other benefits, seagrass may help prevent dredging and its negative impacts on the Ria\u2019s ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A meeting with members of the consortium \u2014 which includes Portuguese, Spanish, and German research centers, companies, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) \u2014 marks the launch of the LIFE SeagrassRIAwild<\/strong> project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The meeting is taking place today, October 18, and tomorrow, in the Academic Hall at the UA Rectorate building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pedro Coelho, researcher at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM)<\/strong>, explains that the small patches of Zostera marina<\/em> recently found in one of the lagoon\u2019s branches are not sufficient for system-wide repopulation. The project\u2019s goal is therefore to use former salt pans owned by UA, next to the PCI Creative Science Park, as cultivation areas based on material imported from other systems, and from there to restore the Ria\u2019s channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n (PT)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Apesar de ser historicamente uma das esp\u00e9cies colhidas com o moli\u00e7o, \u00e0s carradas transportadas em barcos da Ria e usada para adubar os solos, a Zostera marina \u00e9 hoje uma erva marinha amea\u00e7ada.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Por isso, investigadores da Universidade de Aveiro<\/strong> (UA) prop\u00f5em o repovoamento<\/strong>.
