For this reason, researchers at the <strong>University of Aveiro (UA)<\/strong> propose its repopulation. They believe that, among other advantages, seagrass may help prevent dredging and its negative consequences for the Ria\u2019s ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A meeting with members of the consortium \u2014 which includes Portuguese, Spanish, and German research centers, companies, and NGOs \u2014 marks the launch of the <strong>LIFE SeagrassRIAwild<\/strong> project. The meeting is scheduled for <strong>October 18 and 19, 2023<\/strong>, in the <strong>Academic Hall<\/strong> of the UA Rectorate building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pedro Coelho, researcher at the <strong>Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM)<\/strong>, explains that the small patches of <em>Zostera marina<\/em> recently found in one of the lagoon\u2019s branches are not sufficient for system-wide repopulation. The project therefore aims to use former salt pans owned by UA, next to the <strong>PCI-Creative Science Park<\/strong>, as cultivation areas based on material imported from other systems, and from there restore the Ria\u2019s channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The coordinator notes that, in addition to the conservation component that will help recover the ecosystem services provided by this species \u2014 namely providing shelter for marine fauna, increasing biodiversity, stabilizing sediments, and storing blue carbon \u2014 the project will also test the potential effect of its presence in reducing the silting of navigation channels and the resulting dredging operations, which have clear impacts on the lagoon\u2019s seabed and habitats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project, representing an <strong>investment of \u20ac3.5 million<\/strong> and lasting <strong>seven years<\/strong>, also includes an important citizen science component, involving local and regional stakeholders with interests in this sector and in the Ria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>(PT)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apesar de ser historicamente uma das esp\u00e9cies colhidas com o moli\u00e7o, \u00e0s carradas transportadas em barcos da Ria e usada para adubar os solos, a <strong>&#8220;<em>Zostera marina<\/em>&#8221; \u00e9 hoje uma erva marinha amea\u00e7ada.<\/strong> Por isso, <strong>investigadores da Universidade de Aveiro (UA) prop\u00f5em o repovoamento.<\/strong> Acreditam que, entre outras vantagens, a erva marinha <strong>poder\u00e1 prevenir dragagens e respetivas consequ\u00eancias negativas nos ambientes da Ria.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A reuni\u00e3o com os v\u00e1rios membros do <strong>cons\u00f3rcio que envolve centros de investiga\u00e7\u00e3o portugueses, espanh\u00f3is e alem\u00e3es, empresas e ONGs, marca o in\u00edcio do projeto LIFE SeagrassRIAwild.<\/strong> A reuni\u00e3o est\u00e1 agendada para <strong>18 e 19 de outubro de 2023<\/strong>, na Sala de Atos Acad\u00e9micos no edif\u00edcio da Reitoria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pedro Coelho<\/strong>, investigador do Centro de Estudos do Ambiente e do Mar (CESAM), explica que as pequenas manchas de <em>Zostera marina<\/em> descobertas recentemente num dos bra\u00e7os da Ria n\u00e3o permitem o repovoamento do sistema. O objetivo do projeto passa ent\u00e3o por <strong>usar antigas marinhas que s\u00e3o propriedade da UA, junto ao PCI-Creative Science Park, para espa\u00e7o de cultivo com base em importa\u00e7\u00e3o de outros sistemas e, a partir da\u00ed, repovoar os canais da Ria.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O coordenador indica que, para al\u00e9m da vertente de conserva\u00e7\u00e3o que <strong>permitir\u00e1 recuperar os servi\u00e7os prestados ao ecossistema por esta esp\u00e9cie, nomeadamente providenciar abrigo para a fauna marinha, aumentar a biodiversidade, axar os sedimentos e armazenar carbono azul<\/strong>, ser\u00e1 testado o <strong>potencial efeito da presen\u00e7a desta esp\u00e9cie na redu\u00e7\u00e3o do assoreamento dos canais de navega\u00e7\u00e3o e consequentes trabalhos de dragagem<\/strong>, com evidentes impactos nos fundos e nos ambientes da Ria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O projeto, que corresponder\u00e1 a um <strong>investimento de 3,5 milh\u00f5es de euros<\/strong> e tem a <strong>dura\u00e7\u00e3o de sete anos<\/strong>, inclui uma importante vertente de ci\u00eancia cidad\u00e3, <strong>envolvendo agentes locais e regionais com interesses neste sector e na Ria.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(EN) Although it was historically one of the species harvested together with moli\u00e7o \u2014 carried in boatloads from the Ria and used to fertilize soils \u2014 Zostera marina is today a threatened seagrass.
